My fourth horror trailer analysis

Paranormal activity 2 is the sequel to the first paranormal activity is a horror genre similar to the one i want to make. I looked very closely at all the different affects used to help us create a similar impression on our audience. Paranormal as a definition is something which designates experiences that lie outside "the range of normal experience or scientific explanation"

The first scene the audience see is complete darkness and all we hear is the digetic sound of wind blowing to try spook the audience and create a calming affect until the bedroom scene appear through a straight cut where a long shot of the bedroom is used to establish the setting then quickly the digetic sound from windblown changes in a split second to a booming noise where a character is suddenly flinged towards the camera creating a mysterious affect towards the audience as the affect from the peace of wind blowing to the male character being flung by a force which we deem to be an alien on at the camera shows the opposites of quiet to loud which is a common convention in horror trailers i have analysed.

During the trailer audience members experience the enigma of what is happening or going to happen in the house and the use of cross cutting between the house and the garden give an even greater effect as the audience members believe they our actually in the scene and are experiencing what is going on in the narrative. The high angle shot and the date in the bottom right corner gives the impression that it is being filmed through CCTV surveillance this creates realism to the audience members that the scene is not staged and is filmed through a live recording device i believe this adds the the whole horror scene effect the unpredictability of what is happening. The digetic sound effects of chairs rocking is intensified greatly during the trailer to give an impact that the unusual is happening, this is a common occurrence in horror film trailers to try grip audience members.

The music like alot of other horror trailers tends to be quiet and use digetic sound to create a sense of realism in the scene but when something is about to happen increases in pitch then suddenly when the horror is happening in this case when the audience are in the cinema and jump up in fear which we as the audience suspect is due to watching something "paranormal" take place.

Alot of the trailer is set in darkness which is to do with the lighting and camera angles there is very little light if any whitin the whole trailer this sets the scene of horror as stereotypically the "paranormal" takes place at night. The low lighting is a common convention of horror trailers and is an integral part on creating the unknown in scene.

When we see the crowd through a straight cut the audience experience the emotions of what the cinema audience are going like there facial reaction through a close up shot this makes us see the fear in their eyes when watching certain bits which makes the audience want to experience the emotion as well.

The mise en scene of the trailer is simple due to the scenes being shot in real life so to create a realistic trailer the objects in must be which stereotypical items which would be displayed in a bedroom e.g lamp shades, beds. The house resembles a stereotypical middle class house which is the target audience of the film this is so audience members can relate to the situation the characters are going through as if the scene was shot in a mansion this may alienate a particular social class who may not feel connected with the characters due to rank.

The text which appears towards the end is typical of a horror trailer which is dark background and the bold white font to make the words stand out. The words say "nothing can prepare you" which is followed by "FOR WHATS NEXT" in capital letters with a similar background. The way the letters are in capital emphasises the horror in what is being written, for whats next leaves the audience on a cliche cliff hanger ending this makes them ask themselves question which will intice them to watch the film
